Pendant light is one of the most elegant types of lights which hang from the ceiling mostly suspended by a chain, metal rod or a cord. Pendant lights are mostly used in multiples and are usually hung over the kitchen counter tops, eating bars, wet bars or above built-in-cabinetry in a straight line. Pendants come in a huge range of designs. Some pendant lights contain a single light bulb mounted base up inside a holder or under an open reflector while some lights like lanterns and chandeliers which have bulbs mounted down is also a part of the pendant light family.
Pendant lights are used in different ways. Pendant lights are mostly used for area lighting, task lighting and general lighting. We use pendant lights in our kitchens, dining rooms, bedrooms, stairwells, family rooms as well as in our bathrooms. They are mainly used to light up narrow spaces or hallways, highlight paintings, photographs and sculptures.
Pendants lights used for General Lighting
Pendant lights are generally mounted as a central fixture in almost all rooms. And sometimes used in multiples in a straight line to light a narrow hallway or a corridor. Pendant lights are also used as a porch light. One of the most appealing qualities of a pendant light when used for general lighting is that many of these lights are used to light up the ceiling and as that light spreads to the entire ceiling and gets reflected back down, it lights up the whole room or the hallway. It also throws light to each corners and edges of the living space.
Pendant lights used for Area Lighting
Major difference between general lighting and area lighting is that area lighting lights up only a portion of the room. Pendant lights used for area lighting are generally used as corner lights particularly in rooms which are large or rooms which are intended for entertainment. These pendant lights can be a pair of wall sconces mounted generally around three to four feet from the wall. Pendant lights are also used to provide light over long sofas or recliners or sometimes hung at each end which makes it more comfortable. Pendant lights are not only chosen to light up a space but also to add a decorative flair to the entire living space. From bamboo, shade, lantern, bell, drum, linear or glass, pendant lights are available in different shapes, forms and designs suitable for homes of different styles and budget.
